Prague Art and Architecture - ART131/3 Spring 2026

This course gives students an insightful orientation into the history of western art from the Middle Ages to the contemporary period through the architecture and art of Prague. The city is seen as a virtual openair museum and a life-size 3-D reading book; therefore the classroom lectures are combined with regular excursions throughout the city.

Here is the course outline:

Class 1 - Course syllabus, Lecture 1 + Field trip

Feb 4 11:15am .. 2pm

Topic: Lecture – Overview of the history and architectural styles of Romanesque and Gothic art and architecture – in class Field trip after the lecture: Walk and talk about the history of the AAU location: Thurn-Taxis palace, Vojan gardens + Kampa Island Description: See your closest surroundings and their historical importance. Reading: Review the pdf Lecture 1 in NEO. Assignments/deadlines for week 2: Discussion 1 in NEO, 5% from the practical field trip – there will be 13 discussions in total by the end of the course, one every week = 65%, graded by 5%.

Class 2 - Visit to the Museum of the City Prague

Feb 11 11:15am .. 2pm

Meeting in the AAU courtyard across from Cafe des Taxis at 11:15 am SHARP! Topic: Get familiar with the unique model of Prague created by A. Langweil and the early 19th century lifestyle in Prague. Assignments/deadlines for week 3: Discussion 2 in NEO, 5% – see the assignment drop box. ! Watch the video on Gothic cathedrals, link in NEO – questions will be asked during the field trip of class 3 (Class activity points awarded).

Class 3 - Field trip: Prague Castle

Feb 18 11:15am .. 2pm

Topic: Field trip: Prague Castle – AAU courtyard at 11:15 pm SHARP! / DRESS WARM!! Description: The architectural styles of gothic, baroque, and classical styles + Nerudova street (House signs) – prepare for walking during most of the class / wear comfortable and warm shoes, dress warm! • Review questions after the walk from the video on the Gothic cathedrals from class 2 homework will be discussed – activity points awarded. Reading: Review the pdf field trip summary in NEO. Assignments/deadlines for week 4: Discussion 3 in NEO, 5% – see the assignment drop box. Homework written assignment hand-out – 5%, due week 5 Get familiar with the house signs in Nerudova street + other parts of Prague’s Old Town. Make research + Place the written assignment to NEO drop box. Assignment description will be provided during the field trip, + to NEO.

Class 4 - Field trip: St. Agnes monastery

Feb 25 11:15am .. 2pm

Topic: Gothic, Field trip: St. Agnes monastery, Gothic monument + Gothic art collection AAU courtyard at 11:15 pm SHARP / DRESS WARM!! Description: The earliest Gothic monastery in Bohemia + Gothic paintings / sculptures. Location: St. Agnes monastery, National Gallery Reading: Review the pdf field trip summary in NEO. Class 5 - Old Town + Midterm test instructions

Meeting in the classroom - Midterm test areas Hand-out After that a Field trip: Romanesque and Gothic architecture Romanesque rotunda of the Holy Cross + The Old Town, Bethlehem chapel, Old Town square, Astronomical clock tower, Tyn church, House at the minute (Kafka), Charles University, Ungelt. Description: The Rotunda is among the oldest preserved monuments in Prague. The walk will continue to the Old Town of Prague. Reading: Review the pdf field trip summary in NEO. Class 6 - Field trip - Former Jewish town

Mar 11 11:15am .. 2pm

Topic: Field trip: The Jewish town / DRESS WARM!! AAU courtyard at 11:15 pm SHARP. Be on time. Description: Field trip to visit the area of the former Jewish ghetto/town Reading: Review the pdf field trip summary in NEO. Class 7 – The Hradcany district, Strahov monastery, the New World

Mar 18 11:15am .. 2pm

Topic: The Hradcany district, Strahov monastery, the New World area. Meeting in the courtyard at 11:15 pm SHARP Description: We will explore the area of the upper Hradcany district with its hidden treasures. Class 8 - Test + The Charles Bridge + Boat ride

Meeting in class: Short Recognition Midterm test – 10% After that a field trip to The Charles Bridge + a boat ride Description: Square of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star, Museum of the Charles bridge + a Boat ride on the Vltava River. Class 9 - Lecture + Field trip - Renaissance Royal Garden

Apr 8 11:15am .. 2pm

Lecture in class: Renaissance art and architecture After a field trip to the Summer Palace of Queen Anne + the Royal gardens. Description: Students will be able to see and recognize the features of Renaissance style. Reading: Study the pdf lecture + field trip summary in NEO. Assignments/deadlines for week 10: Discussion 9 in NEO, 5% – see the assignment drop box. NOTE: There will be an interesting workshop focused on trying one printing technique with stamp letters as part of a workshop with our guest visitors from the university in Portugal on Tuesday, April 14, and Wednesday, April 15 in the Community time from 2 – 3 pm. Make a note for it in your calendar. Everyone is welcome! Do not let it pass!

Class 10 - Lecture: Mannerism + Wallenstein+Vrtba gardens

Apr 15 11:15am .. 2pm

Come from 2 – 3 pm to the classroom 1.31 to make your own cool poster! Everybody is welcome! Short lecture in class: Mannerism After a field trip to the Manneristic Wallenstein Garden + 17th century Baroque gem, the Vrtba garden. Description: Students will be able to see the Manneristic style and which elements make the style recognizable. The walk will take us to a hidden gem among the Prague gardens, in the Lesser Town. The hidden Baroque treasure will show a great example of the genius of a local builder Kanka for Count Vrtba in the 17th century Prague. Do not miss this trip!

Class 11 - Lecture +Field trip: Baroque, Lesser Town

Apr 22 11:15am .. 2pm

Lecture in class: Baroque Final written essay hand-out + information, DUE by Tuesday, May 12 (15%) After a field trip to Renaissance and baroque architecture, Lesser Town. Field trip to walk in the neighborhood from AAU – St. Thomas church, Lesser Town square, St. Nicolas church, church of Our Lady Victorious (Baby Jesus) Description: The walk will introduce the history and monuments close to AAU. Class 12 - Field trip – The Old Masters, NG

Meeting in the AAU courtyard. 11:15 sharp: The art of painting and sculpture in renaissance and baroque times Field trip: The Old Masters – National Gallery, Schwarzenberg Palace, in the Hradcany district Description: Visit of an important collection of art from the Renaissance and Baroque European Masters. Video on Baroque homework will be discussed again for the typical features of the style. Assignments/deadlines for week 13: Discussion 12 in NEO, 5% – see the assignment drop box.

Class 13 - 19th and early 20th century architecture

May 6 11:15am .. 2pm

Meeting in the AAU courtyard. 11:15 sharp: The Industrial style, 19th and early 20th century Description: Main train station, (Secession/Art Nouveau), Jerusalem synagogue, The Municipal house, Cubism – Czech version in architecture – Josef Gočár (House by the Black Madonna) Assignments/deadlines for week 14: Discussion 13 in NEO, 5% – see the assignment drop box. Class 14 - Museum Kampa + Final essay due

May 13 11:15am .. 2pm

Walking distance field trip to the Kampa island to visit Museum Kampa, potentially also the Monument against communism. Description: Modern art – Frank Kupka, temporary exhibitions Reading: Review the pdf lecture + the field trip summary in NEO.
