Here is the course outline:

Class 1: Course introduction

Feb 3 3pm .. 5:45pm

Topic: Lecture 1: Introduction, DADA movement Class Information, discussion about class expectations, observing together selected conceptual pieces of art. Description: Introduction to the conceptual way of thinking. Reading: ● Study lecture 1 + homework for NEO discussion 1. ● Study the links of the artists in NEO (provided by teacher). ● Read the selected excerpts from DADA, Phaidon Press Limited, 2006 (scanned to NEO Resources). Assignments/deadlines for week 2: ● Review the pdf lecture DADA – An introduction to conceptual thinking. ● Homework from lecture 1 – NEO discussion 1 before week 2. ● Prepare a short PPT + oral self-presentation. Place the pdf (minimal size!) to NEO drop box. ● Participate in the NEO discussion 1.

Class 2: Lecture 2, 1950s – 1960s, Conceptual Art, Mind mapping

Feb 10 3pm .. 5:45pm

Topic: Lecture 2, 1950s – 1960s, Conceptual Art, Introduction to Mind mapping ● Short PPT student introductions and self-presentations ● Project 1, Mind map, Part 1, 10%: Introduction. Learn how to make a basic mind map and why it could help you expand your creative thinking. ● Introduction of the first Mind map graded project, discussion, developing insights. Reading: Study lecture 2 for NEO discussion 2. Assignments/deadlines for week 3: ● Work individually on developing your mind map project, partial development presentation - work-in-progress in week 4. Final mind map is due in week 5. ● Participate in the NEO Discussion 2.

Class 3: Gallery visit, Project in progress

Feb 17 3pm .. 5:45pm

Topic: Gallery visit #1 + Written evaluation 1, 7% (written part) + 3% (assembly) = 10%, Meeting in the classroom at 3 pm SHARP, Gallery – Rudolfinum visit Description: We will visit during the class a selected gallery in Prague which displays conceptually oriented show. Task: Select individually one piece from the show to describe in writing its creative conceptual idea. Separate assignment description will be provided in class 3 before leaving for the gallery visit. Assignments/deadlines for week 4: ● See the task description before week 3 in NEO resources. ● Hand-out: Written Research evaluation essay from the gallery exhibition, 7% (written part) + 3% (assembly) = 10%, DUE week 6 to NEO. Apply research to your paper analysis. ● Project 1, Mind map – continue the work at home, present work-in-progress in week 4, final mind map project 1 is DUE in week 5.

Class 4: Practical class – An Assemblage

Feb 24 3pm .. 5:45pm

Topic: Practical class – An Assemblage, graded partially together with the written evaluation #1 assignment. Bring some materials to work with for the class. ● An extension practical project from the Gallery visit #1 – individual practical part in class (3% partial grade to the written assignment worth 7%, together the parts make up 10%.) As a creative technique, practice the “assemblage” – see lecture 1 + 2 examples. ● Bring your Mind map project 1 – work in progress for class feedback (final mind map due week 5) ● During the class: Individual consultations of the progress of Project 1 – Mind map. Bring the drawing development to class. Assignments/deadlines for week 5: ● Mind map, project 1, final execution – 10%, DUE.

Class 5: Mind map presentations + WOW Mind map

Mar 3 3pm .. 5:45pm

Topic: Project 1 – Mind map, final execution in-class PRESENTATIONS (10%) Bring the final Mind map artwork visualization and present it to class from the NEO submission – make sure that the image is in a correct position to share! Introduction: Project 1, Mind map – Part 2, 10% - Create your WOW Art Mind Map as a self-sustaining piece of art, DUE week 7. In-class work on the initial creative ideas. An explanation of how to work on an artistic expression of your mind map will be shared by the teacher. Reading: See the required chapter to read in NEO before class 6. Assignments/deadlines for week 6: ● Develop 3 visual creative ideas / well-developed sketches to discuss and share with others in class 6. Discuss how to turn your mind map into a WOW visual effect. Ideate for the three conceptual creative ideas based on your Project 1, part 1 - final mind map. ● Short Written Research evaluation Paper 1 + Assemblage from the Gallery visit #1, – 10% to NEO – DUE! ● Work-in-progress: Create a WOW Art Mind Map – 10% (by week 7)

Class 6: Lecture 3: Meet conceptual Czech artists

Topic: Lecture 3: Conceptual art – Selected Czech conceptual artists Potential guest artist visit in class - TBC Project 1, WOW Mind map – Part 2 (work-in-process): ● Bring your 3 sketches of the WOW Art Mind Map , place also the pdf document to NEO + Share the development of your artistic mind map in class with the teacher and the classmates. Discuss the progress. Reading: Study pdf lecture 3 for NEO discussion. Assignments/deadlines for week 7: ● NEO Discussion 3

Class 7: Midterm Presentations of the WOW Mind Map

Mar 19 11:15am .. 2pm

Topic: Midterm presentations + Place a photo of the final WOW mind with a short written description to the drop box before due - see the Task description. Individual presentations of the Final WOW Art Mind Map, (10%) Describe the conceptual way of thinking behind the idea, defend your WOW creative visual idea of the mind map. Bring the finished WOW Mind map to class!

Class 8: Gallery visit #2

Mar 24 3pm .. 5:45pm

Gallery visit #2 + Written evaluation 2, 10% – Art Studio of the Janousek couple (guided tour), Meeting in front of the classroom at 3 pm SHARP. Description: The class will visit a unique artistic studio of two sculptors whose main body of work falls into the 1960s and 1970s. Task: In the written evaluation, argue about the nature of the conceptual work of Vera Janouskova. Assignments/deadlines for week 9: • Written Research evaluation essay from the Gallery visit #2, 10% • NEO discussion 4 • Read the prescribed article in NEO before week 9

Class 9: Lecture 4: Conceptual art – 1960 - 70s

Apr 7 3pm .. 5:45pm

Topic: Lecture 4: Conceptual art – 1960 - 70s Examples of artists focusing on conceptualization of visual ideas. Introduction of the Long-term Conceptual Art Project #2, 40% in total of all 4 phases (10% each phase), final execution DUE week 13 Description: Introduction of the project, discussion, developing insights. Development of an in-depth systematic process of thinking and an original conceptual application of your ideas. Work-in-progress will be presented by partial presentations over the next weeks. Task: Create a socially oriented participatory conceptual art project. The final output will be a finished art installation with a participatory aspect. Reading: Study the prescribed reading in NEO before lecture of week 10. Assignments/deadlines for week 10: ● Project #2, Phase 1 (10%) – develop an initial mind map (to practice divergent thinking) of the various possible “branches”/directions – by week 10. Bring your mind map development to class 10 + place a document to NEO.

Class 10: Workshop

Apr 14 3pm .. 5:45pm

Topic: Workshop to practice work with letters and chance “Poem Factory” explores automatism, printing, and reproduction, emphasizing the unintentional. – Guest lecturers from Portugal, IPVC University, focus on printing techniques. Project 2, Phase 1 is DUE to NEO: Due to the workshop, feedback will be given in writing. (10%). Assignments/deadlines for week 11: ● Phase 2 (10%) - Apply independently feedback comments – develop first 3 visual creative executions ideas based on the mind map evolution + place the document to NEO. ● NEO Discussion 5 based on the workshop experience

Class 11: Topic: Post-Conceptual Artists

Apr 21 3pm .. 5:45pm

Topic: Lecture 5: Selection of the Post-Conceptual Artists (Beuys) Long-term Project #2, Phase 2 Presentations – 3 Creative Visual Execution ideas (10%) Individual in-class consultations with a class discussion and feedback. You will present your creative execution ideas for the conceptual solutions (3 possible visual and conceptual directions to be presented as drawings and explained). Assignments/deadlines for week 12: ● Develop your Long-term Project #2, Phase 3, work on 1 selected idea. ● Students develop an invitation poster for their final class exhibition in week 14, May 12, starting from 4 pm, to be distributed by the Marketing and Events department ahead of time. ( 1%)

Class 12: Lecture 6 + Presentations

Apr 28 3pm .. 5:45pm

Long-term Project #2, Phase 3 Presentations (10%) Present the selected creative idea execution drawings - Progress of your art project will be graded, finalizing the details. Lecture 6: Selection of a few international conceptual and influential women artists. Assignments/deadlines for week 13: ● Phase 4, 10%: Finalize the selected strongest creative idea for a finished art piece in class 13 - place the document to NEO (10%). ● Discussion 6 hand-out

Class 13: Final presentation of the Long-term Art Project

May 5 3pm .. 5:45pm

Topic: Long-term Project #2, Phase 4 - Final execution of your art piece, bring your final art piece to class! (10%) – Defend your art piece in front of the class and the teacher. An interactive and participative art. (The 4 Phases will be graded by a partial grade of 10% – 10% - 10% - 10%) Assignments/deadlines for week 14: ● The Artist statement to NEO + printed out ● Discussion 7

Class 14: Final presentations of your Long-term Project

May 12 3pm .. 5:45pm

Class exhibition in the AAU Art Studio, activity points grade Final visual art piece / conceptual installation / to be done in class from 3 pm. The public exhibition opening will follow from 4 pm. Assignments/deadlines DUE: ● The Artist statement to NEO + printed out ● Discussion 7 ● The grade for the final part 4 and the finalized project will be completed by participating in the class exhibition in week 14.
