1. Introduction

This session focuses at: - Syllabus review, with particular focus on the general content of the course, the teaching methodology, and finally the course requirements. - Introductory discussion about the concept of law. 2. Definition of Law, Purpose of Law

This topic discusses the nature of law, the concept of rule of law, law and democracy, law and social change. Readings uploaded on NEO: - Martin Partington, Law and Society: the Purposes and Functions of Law, in Introduction to the English Legal System (Oxford University Press 2006). Assignments/Deadlines: Answer to forum posts on the Padlet.

3. Natural Law

This topic provides an account of natural law in early modern Europe. Readings uploaded on NEO: - Padoa – Schioppa Antonio, A History of the Law in Europe (From the Early Middle Ages until the Twentieth Century), chapter 23 (Cambridge University Press 2017). 4. Law and Morality

This topic focuses on predominant theories of ethical conduct. Readings uploaded on NEO: Padoa – Schioppa Antonio, A History of the Law in Europe (From the Early Middle Ages until the Twentieth Century), chapter 27 (Cambridge University Press 2017). 5. Legal Traditions I

This topic focuses on the civil law legal tradition. Readings uploaded on NEO: - John Henry Merryman, Rogelio Perez-Perdomo, The Civil Law Tradition, An Introduction to the Legal System of Europe and Latin America (Stanford University Press 4th ed. 2019) Assignments/Deadlines: Written assignment No. 1 will be published in the NEO platform.

6. Legal Traditions II

This topic focuses on the common law legal system and techniques of reading a case. Readings uploaded on NEO: - Gary L. U. 7. Law and Society

This topic provides a short overview of the work of Lawrence Friedman in Legal Sociology. Readings uploaded on NEO: - Lauren B. 8. Language and the Law

This topic focuses on legal jargon and the importance of language and punctuation in law. Readings uploaded on NEO: - Gary L. U. Slapper, How the law works, (Routledge Taylor & Francis 2016), pg. 217 – 237. Assignments/Deadlines: Individual work with hypothetical cases (to be distributed)

9. Law and Business I

This session will take place in person, at a date agreed with the students.

This session focuses on: - The multinational enterprise - Features of the corporate form Readings uploaded on NEO: - August, R., Mayer, D., & Bixby, M. (2014). 10. Law and Business II

This topic focuses on agency problems in the corporate context, and the related legal strategies. Readings uploaded on NEO: - John Armour, Henry Hansmann, Reinier Kraakman, Anatomy of Corporate Law, Agency problems, Legal Strategies and Enforcement, Working Paper N°.135/2009 November 2009 (ECGI Working Paper Series in Law). Assignments/Deadlines: Assignment No. 2 will open in NEO. Students select a topic for their individual presentations, out of the list published by the lecturer on the NEO platform. Alternatively, the students may propose a topic of their interest. The lecturer will post the requirements regarding the assignment in NEO.

11. The Modern Concept of Law/The New Lawyer

Modern law should be applied by a “new”/modern lawyer. This topic discusses the new lawyer, that has to adapt to globalisation, new technologies, AI etc. Readings uploaded on NEO: - Nickolas James, Rachael Field, Jackson Walkden-Brown, The New Lawyer (John Wiley & Sons Australia, 2nd ed., 2019), pg. 489 – 515. Assignments/Deadlines: Answer to forum posts on the Padlet.

12. Individual Presentations (W.A no. 2)

May 2, In person session

Presentations by all students on account of their written assignment no. 2. The students will do peer-evaluation, in accordance with the evaluation rubric provided by the lecturer. Reading: The peer evaluation rubric. Assignments/Deadlines: Review materials in preparation for the exam

13. Review of the program/Exam preparation

In person or online session (date to be determined together with the students)

This session consists of in class work with sample exam questions. Reading: No new material. Students have to review what they have already studied and identify issues that are not clear. Assignments/Deadlines: “Trivia” quiz in teams (not graded).

14. Final Exam

May 16, In person

Open book exam, in written form. Students will receive a hypothetical case and will answer a set of questions in relation to it. Reading: No new material
