1. Lesson One
Feb 3
Introduction to Course and instructor. Course expectations. Film language tools. Movement as first tool for Film Language. Assignment: Catch the Motion exercise. Screening of first 48 minutes of The Story of Film: An Odyssey, with Forum assignment. |
2. Lesson Two
Feb 10
We will examine movement as a fundamental and expressive tool in film language. |
3. Lesson Three
Feb 17
we will screen movement exercises and examine Murnau's film Sunrise for how movement is used as an expressive tool. |
4. Lesson 4 - on Frame
Feb 24
We examine frame as an expressive tool in film language within the film Sacrifice by Tarkovski |
5. Lesson 5 - on POV
Mar 3
We will look at narration and point of view theory, examining clips from the film Marketa Lazarova to illustrate how POV helps audience to believe that what they are seeing has really happened. |

7. Screening Composition Exercises

Composition exercises are screened (sent in advance to Professor. Link is submitted on NEO.) Then class proceeds with discussion of shot sizes introduced through partial screening of Zefferelli's Brrother Son, Sister Moon |
8. Midterm

Miidterm test taken in class. Questions relate to tools already examined - movement, frame, POV and composition. |
9. Lesson on Shot Sizes & Angles/Axis
Apr 7
Shot Sizes - we will explore how different shot sizes fulfill different functions in film language. Angles & Axis in film language. Shot size exercise is assigned. Due in two weeks. |
10. Narrative Theory. Simple Storytelling rules

Narrative Rules. The Red Balloon (LaMorisse, 1958) screened for narrative structure. |
11. Lesson on Color
Apr 28
We explore how filmmakers work with color as expressive tool for dramatic storytelling. |
12. Presentation of ShotSize exercise
May 5
We will screen the exercises made to examine the use of shot sizes. angles/axis and simple narrative rules |
13. Final Exam
May 12
Written Test (lectures on Shot Sizes, Axes and Angles, Narrative theory and Color). |
